Organization History

Overview

Establishment of TARIPA and Evolution into RCT The Tanzania Rice Partnership (TARIPA) was formed in 2011 following the launch of SAGCOT, as the first step toward developing a national rice value chain. It pioneered cluster development in Kilombero, Dakawa, and Mbarali, and was showcased at the 2011 World Economic Forum in Cape Town. TARIPA played a vital role in coordinating partnerships, strengthening farmer capacity, building markets, and attracting investments to drive rice sector growth.

Through initiatives like the Kilombero Rice Commodity Investment Plan, TARIPA focused on marketing, production, processing, partnerships, and infrastructure development. Initially housed under USAID/NAFAKA, TARIPA served as a hub for information sharing, partnership incubation, and stakeholder coordination.

On March 31, 2014, rice stakeholders agreed to establish the Rice Council of Tanzania (RCT) as a legal entity to ensure ownership, legitimacy, and strong private sector involvement. RCT was officially registered on June 16, 2014, taking over from TARIPA to provide a formal and recognized institution for leading rice sector development in Tanzania.
